I told him I was the one who ended up doing it, and he asked to see it. During my tenure as a film programmer, I went to dinner with Refn once and by coincidence (I swear) he brought up Kavinsky and mentioned that the label had initially asked him to shoot the same video.

The video got me a Vimeo Staff Pick and jump started my career as a music video director.īecause Kavinsky’s song Nightcall opened up the movie Drive, and our video was a car chase, it got a lot of comparisons to Nicholas Winding Refn’s film, although I still haven’t seen it to this day. The car chase music video was intended to look like a 3 minute excerpt from Outrun so it synced up with the concept nicely. The hope was that the viewer could look at all this imagery and their brain would fill in the plot to Outrun. Each album included several inserts designed to look like production stills and lobby cards featuring scenes from the imaginary film. I treated the album cover as if it were the key art from an imaginary film called Outrun.

This was before vaporwave, before Stranger Things, before Carpenter Brut, and before bluray re-releases really gained traction so the idea of recreating an 80’s film look was still fresh and yet to be burned to the ground.

I envisioned Kavinsky’s new album as the soundtrack to an imaginary 80’s film starring Kavinsky as a zombie who cruised the streets of LA in his 1986 Ferrari Testarossa. So, I made an elaborate pitch deck with test stills and landed the gig-somehow managing to talk the label into tacking on a Ferrari car chase music video to be shot simultaneously with the album cover. Although I had never shot any photos professionally, I decided I was perfect for the job. In 2012, the musician Kavinsky casually asked me if I knew someone that could recreate an 80’s film look for an album cover.
